Well, here goes...
Welcome to "Beyond Capernaum", the potential weblog home of Matt Staniz, pastor of Temple Lutheran Church in Havertown, PA. What this blog will contain is still to be determined (mostly by my will to post and your willingness to read). It may contain sermons as they happen at Temple Lutheran Church...perhaps some some older sermons, too. It may contain record reviews, book reviews, concert reviews, random thoughts and musings.
We shall see...

Matt, grace and peace be upon you. Is great that you have created this blog. Let me just say that as always, the civil religion that sometimes get confused with the worship and praise of the one true God is the issue in today's political debate. Also, regarding Pastor Wright's comments, if we were to compare his rhetoric with that of the Old Testament prophets we would be surprise to find that Pastor Wright's comments are more restrained and less judgmental. In order to speak to power sometimes we do need to use language that challenges and stops us for a moment. Nevertheless, I believe that the African American community and my own Latino commuity bring a prophetic voice that needs to be heard in the midst of the idealism and sometimes naive worldview that many americans have. After all, as the Apostle Peter mentioned in Acts before the authorities when he and John were arrested; "we have to obey God rather than men". May God bless the prophetic voice of the church.
In Christ;
Rev. Nelson Rabell, Apostles' Lutheran Church in Turnersville, New Jersey
